Snow report Tux Alps, 01/23/2022

Snow condition

Well below average, on west and south-facing slopes from 1,800 meters downwards you are actually only skiing on grass or very little snow. Feels more like April. Even higher up, there are still lots of stones sticking out. Visually, the fresh snow has improved the situation somewhat, but it's not really winter. The last 300 m downhill require either good stone skis or short stretches of carrying.

Snow quality

The snow quality varies greatly depending on exposure, altitude and wind influence. In shady, wind-protected areas, beautiful powder was to be found, although in the Tux Alps there is sometimes a lack of base, so the good snow must be enjoyed with caution. There is little snow in areas exposed to the wind and if there is any, it is usually very hard.

The main danger is drift snow. This is usually on the south and south-west exposures. You should also be aware of the risk of injury from stones and the danger of falling on the hard surface.

Overall impression

All in all, a beautiful Sunday tour to a rather lonely summit in the Wattental valley. The snow quality was quite good in places, but we stuck to the flatter terrain with an uncertain base. For a really good powder day, however, the base is definitely missing there, especially on the descent through the forest!
