Snow report Upper Bavaria, 01/08/2017
Early bird jaunt at the end of the vacations.
Upper Bavaria
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
From the valley to the tree line between 60 and 90 cm of snow. Very variable higher up and therefore uninteresting/useless. Only a few centimetres of fresh snow overnight, most of it fell during the day yesterday. You can finally step on the gas on calmer slopes. No ground contact today.
Snow quality
The quality has deteriorated somewhat over the past few days, the snow has become very dull, especially where the wind comes in. Just 3 stars, because it was still very dusty.
Risks
3s over 1600m. In a flat, actually quite sheltered lee slope at ~1400m I triggered a clear boom on the ascent. No other observations. Hopefully the extreme temperature differences in the snowpack will soon settle down a bit so that it not only settles but also relaxes.
Overall impression
A fine extended touring weekend topped off this morning. Alone on the Dürrnbachhorn (!) or earlier than the fitness pensioners and even found a completely untouched spot to ski down. Expectations exceeded despite very slow snow.
