Uncomfortable touring in Chiemgau
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
There is definitely snow, and it has reached all the valleys. However, with the current higher temperatures and some rain, it is rapidly decreasing below around 800m. Further up there is probably more snow than there has been for a while, but dense forest and blown-over ridges etc. are not yet easy to ski on.
Snow quality
Difficult. Completely wet in the valley, then damp and turning directly into heavily blown concrete, even in the forest. By midday there was about 5 cm of heavy and mostly wind-blown fresh snow on top, which was still the best to ski on. it would probably be better at higher altitudes, but with the current avalanche situation and poor visibility, you can't do anything there.
Risks
Critical, although probably a little less than the last two days. The snow has settled, but with the strong wind, snow is still being blown away, and there is now a new supply coming, and in addition to snow slabs, attention must also be paid to sliding snow and breaking trees or branches.
Overall impression
Rather medium.
Fresh snow would be necessary for the snow quality, but this would probably increase the avalanche risk again...
