Snow condition
Ski tour in the Mangfallgebirge. Since last week, you can finally start on the shaded side at valley level (800 m) with a forest trail on the first few meters of altitude. There is virtually no snow in places exposed to the wind. Entire slopes are partially blown out. If you look for corners sheltered from the wind, you can leave your skis on in the meantime. The snow conditions are very much influenced by the wind. In addition, the total amount of snow is still below average.
Snow quality
Around 15 cm of cold fresh snow lay on a fairly compact base (without a hard top) on our wind-protected playground today. On the descent into the valley around midday, the snow became heavier over the last few meters due to the rise in temperature.
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: medium
Risks
Wind intensity: High (40 – 60 km/h)
There is a lot of drift snow near the ridge and you should also watch out for cornices. Some of these have now reached a considerable size. Close to the ground, there is still a thin layer of ice (under the drift snow) in places exposed to the wind and a transformation building up underneath. However, this has improved somewhat this week.
Overall impression
Nice ski tour with good snow before the heat came. Now let's wait and see what happens next week. Let's hope for less wind and lots of fresh snow. The conditions should get better.
