Snow condition
Despite all the rain, there is still enough snow in the Spitzing area for the vast majority of tours from the parking lot. Nevertheless, a fair amount of snow has of course flowed into the lake.
Snow quality
The wind has done a tremendous job: Some of the ridges are completely bare, all the snow and fresh snow has been blown into the leeward sides and the bottom layer of hard old snow has been left behind. It has rained up to at least 1700 m. Pale patches alternate with a hard snow surface and snow-covered hollows. Nevertheless, the old snow was surprisingly good to ski on, as it was grippy, quite homogeneously hard and not slushy.
Risks
Ridges, exposed areas and in some cases entire slopes (e.g. Hochmiesing) are open, gullies and hollows in the lee are correspondingly massively blown in. In areas facing away from the wind, there is therefore a definite drift snow problem. The next snowfall will fall on a very hard, partly icy surface.
Overall impression
Despite all the wind and rain, it is surprisingly easy to ski right up to the summit, as there is no broken snow and the surface is homogeneously hard.
And, if you're lucky, like today, you can pick up a drink or a delicious meal (today the best Alpine chilli) at the Rauhkopfhütte below the Schönfeldalm!
