Warum in die Ferne Schweifen
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
when good things are so close! up to 50 m from my better half's front door. Unbuckled once to cross the road
Snow quality
Split in two. Below approx. 1100m broken harsh snow, above that short dust on crust and above 1200-1300 on the shaded side (NW-NE) even deeper, settled powder. Ridge layers have hard wind cover
Risks
Unusually, the wind came from the south this time, drifts and drifting snow are the rule further up. I wasn't quite sure today when entering the summit slope (north-east, blown in, short, approx. 35°), especially as I was traveling alone. A quick extended column test did reveal one or two sliding layers, but very poor fracture propagation (only when the block was pushed from behind). Only the top few cm were easier to release.
Overall impression
It's hard to say how much fresh snow has fallen during the night. In any case, it's still really, really good further up in the shade. The descent to the summit had a bit of a big mountain feeling, and then after the second ascent there was some first-class treeskiing. You have to see the way up to 1000 m as a journey ;)
