Snow condition

The fresh snow from the beginning of the week has settled well. Despite the now spring-like temperatures, the amount of snow is decent. Only ridges and crests that are exposed to strong winds are now piling up a little (see picture).

Snow quality

We planned our tour today according to the best possible firn. That worked out quite well. At 9:30 a.m. an east-facing descent from approx. 1700 m to approx. 1450 m, then a south-facing descent with a slight westerly section at 10:40 a.m. again from approx. 1700 m to approx. 1450 m and finally a south-west-facing descent at 11:30 a.m. (starting point again around 1700 m). The time window is currently quite manageable, as the snow cover was only a few centimeters thick.

Spring conditions, start early and finish early. The main problem at the moment is gliding snow. Avoid sliding snow cracks at all costs.

Overall impression

On Tuesday there was still deep powder and today the first firn, it can happen that quickly. Today was a beautiful, sunny day with few people in the early morning (the crowds only arrived at the end of the tour), plus spring-like temperatures and the first firn, so you can't complain.
