Snow report Upper Bavaria, 02/16/2020

Snow condition

You can still start and ski down from 1100 m, but the possibilities are extremely limited due to a lack of snow. Very sunny and wind-exposed areas, spots exposed to the wind, ridges and summits are more or less snow-free or do not invite you to ski. A tragedy for mid-February.

Snow quality

The snow quickly became softer due to the spring-like temperatures. Today it was a mix of heavily settled powder, already slightly damp snow and occasionally even harder/frozen sections. We were mainly out and about in the west and south exposures today.

This morning quite relaxed here up to 1700 m. In the meantime, there are quite solid cornices in the entrances to the leeward terrain. There you can see the transitions from little to more snow very clearly. Once the snow cover is not frozen through, it quickly loses stability due to the spring-like temperatures and sunlight. Avoid sliding snow cracks and don't be out too late. LWS 2 >1600 m.

Overall impression

Well, better than sitting at home, getting some fresh air and hoping that the snow situation in this "winter" will change for the better. A snowfall without a storm would be something...
