Snow report Upper Bavaria, 02/23/2015
Night tour Geigelstein area: Steep north-facing slopes/channels good again (650-1650)

Overall impression
Snow condition
In the valley on the north side just enough to ski down. From about 900m, 5cm (strangely enough) of quite dry fresh snow on sufficient old snow. The amount of fresh snow increases as the altitude rises. The targeted gully (NE, 1300 - 1650) was very well filled with an average of 15cm of fresh snow. This on a stable, thick layer of old snow.
Snow quality
In the approach to the gully not very rewarding: quite hard old snow with partly cosmetic 5cm of powdery, bound fresh snow. In the gully the fresh snow was exposed to increasing wind influence, which made the situation look more dangerous than it was, real drift snow was actually only the top few centimeters.
Risks
Yesterday, the Bavarian situation report issued level 2 below 1500, level 1 above (due to sliding snow). Today, level 1 at all altitudes. This can definitely be confirmed, but there are certainly isolated drift snow packs at higher altitudes that would have deserved a 2; the wind was quite strong.
Overall impression
The gully on Breitenstein (aka Hirsch) is rarely found completely untracked, with good snow and avalanche safety. Great evening action, but generally a 1-2 star rating applies to the region
