Snow report Upper Black Forest, 01/19/2018
Exploring the Stollenbach stream
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Very little down at 1000 m, just enough on the meadow. You can forget about the forest. Further up, I was surprised to see that some of the snow was more than a meter deep. So at 1250m it was very heterogeneous, but not too bad overall. With the fresh snow coming up, just under two stars.
Snow quality
It was also unpleasantly icy down here, probably the loudest snow I've ever ridden in! At the top, I was pleasantly surprised by the few centimetres of freshly blown snow.
Risks
Strong winds, i.e. very likely quite thick cornices on the Feldberg. In the forest, the main danger comes from half-fallen trees.
Overall impression
Better than I feared but still pretty bad for January. But because it's even worse (last week, probably next week too), I have to give it just under two stars.
