Snow report Upper Black Forest, 01/24/2021

Snow condition

There was more snow again. Closed snow cover from about 500 meters, but a sensible tour start in the southern Black Forest towards the Upper Rhine Graben is only from 700 meters. In the Upper Black Forest it was probably a little earlier and therefore colder for longer. It could also go earlier there. Above 700 meters, there was about 15 to 20 cm of fresh snow on the rest of what was left over from last week.

Snow quality

As is so often the case, the higher the better. Still quite warm overall, even if it was consistently below 0 degrees this morning. Everything above 1000 meters is quite usable, below that still good, but not as fluffy as expected.

Black Forest Classic. Stay away from the cornices, otherwise rather relaxed. There is still danger from above. The trees have suffered a lot from the heavy snow of the last week of rain.

Overall impression

We trembled and hoped that the rain would cause as little damage as possible. Unfortunately, a lot was lost, but the damage was limited. Fortunately, there were more supplies and there are supposed to be more. Unfortunately, the more exotic tours are no longer possible, as you have to start much higher up than last week.
For all those still sitting at home in their pyjamas.... It's still worth it. It was even enough to sink the bus properly into the snow and trigger the first use of snow chains of the season.
