The rain and warm spell has taken away the snow, and now that there has been more cold precipitation since Friday with about 40 cm on the rain crust, there is again or still a solid base for the Black Forest above 800 meters above sea level.
Snow quality
Where the wind didn't affect the snow too much, powder at its finest with around 40cm. With wind influence and as soon as it goes towards 1000 meters and lower, much heavier or light wind harsh.
Risks
There are also cornices in exposures where this has not been the rule in recent years. Today, however, there is also a danger of new snow that is not connected to the old snow cover (rain crust). Slopes with 40° plus went completely down to the crust.
Overall impression
Expectations weren't too high today due to the massive drop in temperature and rain over the last few days. But the two days of snow made up for it and for me today was one of the best days of the Black Forest winter so far.
Once again, we were out and about on the Belchen today. There are lots of hikers on the usual routes, but as soon as you deviate a little it quickly becomes much more lonely.
