Snow condition
Where has all the snow from last week gone? The wind has done a great job and exposed the Sahara desert again, alternatively Sastrugis. There is enough base from around 1000m upwards, but the summits are mostly blown off.
Snow quality
It's actually a star, but if you look you'll find it, or if you're lucky you'll find wind-protected meadows that have preserved snow and enjoy it with a big grin.
Risks
The risk of falling on ice flanks and drift snow packs are currently the main dangers and should be taken into account accordingly. The snow from last week, if still present, has only a poor bond on the Sahara dust.
Overall impression
Initially, we had started the day with the prospect of being outside and no great expectations, especially as a glance at the webcams suggested that there had already been a big rush in the past few days.
Today, however, we did everything right and deliberately chose slope positions and concentrated our planning on slopes protected from the wind and were able to repeat a top day. The masses will probably have been cursing more in the Black Forest and not understood our grins back in the valley.
