Snow report Upper Black Forest, 02/28/2021

Snow condition

There is now only enough snow around the Feldberg and Herzogenhorn. Starting from Ringen is still possible today, but will deteriorate quickly. From the top of the Feldberg pass, however, it should still be possible for the next few days without carrying skis.

Snow quality

The Sahara dust has dispersed and fortunately not deposited much on the snow. It's currently freezing at night and will clear up during the late morning. It tended to stay too cold today while we were out and about.

As long as it remains cold, the snow cover will solidify at night and the risk of wet snow avalanches during the day is not yet very pronounced.

Overall impression

The right spring conditions are currently prevailing in the Black Forest, cold at night and around 10°C in the valley during the day. The start today at around 9 a.m. at Ringen tended to be too early. It had hardly snowed up by around 12 noon. Instead, we skied up the mountain in the morning and cycled down into the valley at lunchtime :)
The crowds are probably no longer expecting winter in the Black Forest, but they're not expecting hiking conditions either, so today was much less busy than the last few weeks.
