Snow report Upper Black Forest, 03/03/2014

Recht schöner Schnee, recht schlechte Sicht. Brauchbare Schneelage in den höchsten Lagen des Schwarzwalds. Aber weiter unten schaut es dürftig bzw. grün aus.

As I wrote at the beginning: there is a fair amount of snow above around 1300 in shady locations. Not extremely abundant, but perfectly fine. The only bad thing is that the Black Forest is just under 1500 m high at its highest point. So there's not too much to do. But the gullies and holes are well filled with snow.

Quite good for this season. On shady slopes, you can sometimes find 20-30 cm of fresh snow with a very good skiable consistency. Of course, there is the usual crust with wind and heat damage, but there are also large areas. So don't expect too much.

Risks

No fresh descents sighted. But I don't understand the avalanche situation this winter anyway. Sometimes everything rumbles down, then it's quiet again. Presumably the next warming next weekend will set some of the avalanche trains in motion again.

Well, it would have been nice if the visibility had been good. It was fine like that if you had to go out anyway.
