Snow report Upper Black Forest, 12/30/2014
Classic Black Forest tour from Stollenbach to the Feldberg and back via Zastler and Immisberg
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
There is now a base of around 50 cm in the Black Forest, where the wind has swept through, much less (around zero) and of course much more where the drift snow has been deposited. For sensible touring, we now need this snow to settle and at least another 30 cm on top.
Snow quality
Beautiful powder on slopes facing away from the wind and in the forest, otherwise very fine crystals that are not bound to each other.
Risks
The cornices over the Zastler slopes are much smaller than expected and do not currently pose too great a risk. The biggest risk is the drift snow, which needs to be watched out for and is currently still clearly visible.
Overall impression
The classic par excellence for half a day. We had a lot of fun, but the snow conditions are still so poor at the moment that you have to watch out for stones and small bushes on the slopes to avoid going off the mountain. The "ski touring community" has unfortunately developed very negatively in the Black Forest in recent years, we already noticed this last winter, but even more so this winter :( Let's hope that this is just a temporary fad...
