Snow report Valle D'Aosta, 01/31/2014
Pila - richtig guter Freeride Vormittag ohne allzu viel Andrang

Snow condition
Unchanged good. Only near the ridge are there still a few stones hiding just below the surface, and further down (< 2000 m) there could still be a little more snow as a base. But all the rewarding variants are perfectly skiable. New snowfall started at midday.
Snow quality
Not quite as much fresh snow over the last 2 days as we had hoped (maybe 30 - 40 cm), but nice and cold and little wind. At the moment it's snowing all the way down to Aosta (600 m). Not the fluffiest powder (a bit of wind effect was already noticeable) and the variable old snow surface is still noticeable on many turns. But on the whole, good skiing without too many surprises.
Risks
According to the LLB, it was a 2nd avalanche. No activity observed, although many steeper slopes and terrain transitions were 'avalanche-promoting'. Will change with the new snowfall and may become a bit trickier depending on the wind.
Overall impression
A really good morning for freeriding: Few people on the lift, usable fresh snow on the lift that only reopened today, and good weather. Unfortunately, it closed in quite quickly and the visibility was gone (pictures all from early morning). With better weather it would probably have been 4 stars. Anyway, off to the 2nd round tomorrow with fresh snow.
