Snowboardtour zum Bec des Etagnes
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
The snow conditions at this altitude are still very good, and the recent snowfall has certainly contributed to this to a moderate extent. Around 30 centimeters came down again on Saturday, May 4th on Mt Fort and Co. On northern slopes from about 2600 meters it was therefore still super powdery on Sunday. (see video link below)
Snow quality
Really still very nice and fluffy in northern exposure above 2600 meters. Below that, up to about 2200 meters, a stable but quite hard crust. Below approx. 2200 meters it gets bumpy, i.e. icy and is also increasingly overgrown.
Risks
Increasing wet snow avalanche situation during the course of the day, or even all day where it no longer freezes at night. The tour was therefore also done in the morning! The danger of dry and wet avalanches was moderate on the day (2s)!
Overall impression
Really damn good for the last day of the season! It felt like high winter on the Bec des Etagnes! PS: Despite the rather crazily delayed CR, I still decided to post it, as the snow conditions for southern Valais and ski tours in the Haute Route area should still be pretty representative!
