Snow report Verbier, 10/21/2016
Exploring the Tsanfleuron glacier, Sanetsch (unfortunately on foot)
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Starting at the Sanetsch Pass, you have to hike up to 2450 m above sea level (approx. 1 hour). Then you can ascend in the basin left behind by the glacier on one side with approx. 10-20 cm of overburden. Some sections are still quite rocky, but a good start for the time of year. Not as expected.
Snow quality
The first snow of the season, quite freshly fallen and in the north-facing part of the ascent route still dry and with good grip on south-facing slopes already thawed.
Risks
There were no avalanches, but the warming during the course of the day caused rockfalls of considerable size in places (see photo).
Overall impression
The plan was actually to hike up to Cabane Prarochet. However, we hadn't allowed for so much snow. Time to get the skis out of the cellar!
