Overall impression
Whitewater, in the heart of the Kootenays, currently has a solid snow base of over 2.5 meters. However, after the snowfall on the 16th, the weather shifted and warmer temperatures moved in. As a result, the snow has changed significantly and become much heavier. That said, it’s still very fun to ski. The snow remains quite maneuverable, although conditions get heavier and slower toward the end of the day—especially at lower elevations. The pistes are enjoyable for carving, though a bit grabby in places. There are plenty of side hits to keep things playful. Off-piste terrain is mostly tracked out unless you’re willing to put in some effort and hike into the sidecountry. We did just that and headed to Trash Chutes—thanks to its north-facing aspect, the snow there was still in good condition, with a crystalline structure, though still on the heavier side. Looking ahead, the forecast calls for rain, so we’ll need to wait for another cold window to bring conditions back to their best.
