Snow report Zauchensee, 12/05/2017
What to do if the oracle has overslept and your gut feeling is against a tour?
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Now it's a clear 3 stars. Only in the deep forest below 1500m can you still catch something under the snow cover, otherwise there's enough snow. Above the tree line, where I wasn't out today, the ridges and crests will be pretty bare. On average, I estimate 30-50cm of fresh snow, sometimes considerably more where the wind has blown and blown in.
Snow quality
Not as fluffy as the last snow, rather compact due to the wind and the higher temperatures, but still very good to ride.
Risks
Even in the sparse forest, the influence of the wind is still noticeable in places and there are some wind lips and structures. The formation of cracks and the occasional settling noise set off alarm bells and remind us to be defensive. The snow is quite tense and above the tree line I immediately sign the tense 3.
Overall impression
So what to do? You venture into the lion's den, the cave that you actually avoid like the devil avoids holy water. And you are surprised. N O T E L E A T E!!!! I couldn't believe it, but I rode First Tracks for a full 3 hours. After that, there was still more than enough to go around and it will still be the same tomorrow in the upper area, even if the snow quality will probably deteriorate quickly. So a full 4 stars for one of the most relaxed ski resort days in a loooong time.
