Snow condition
The snowfall over the last few days in the Rastkogel / Penken ski area was significantly less abundant than in Hochfügen or even the classic north-facing slopes. Approx. 30 cm on bare ground. Skiing without ground contact is not really possible. Nevertheless, with local knowledge and a careful skiing style, some beautiful turns on alpine meadows are possible. For alpine terrain and denser forest, however, you still need a lot more. Ridges and exposed areas are usually blown off.
Snow quality
In wind-protected locations below the tree line, just as you would imagine: 1a powder - but unfortunately too little of it. Otherwise often a bit more compact, but still great to ski. In places where the wind could rage, completely blown-off areas and snow packs alternate.
Risks
Quite tricky where there was already some snow (especially on the north side above 2000m). The first descent in the exposure was met with numerous cracks in the snow cover and the formation of floes. There were also a few other cracks to be seen, but not as dramatic in terms of quantity and extent as in Hochfügen. Quite relaxed in the south-facing forest and meadow terrain.
Overall impression
Winter has finally arrived here too. First day with powder, bluebird, snow-covered trees and a few nice runs. But not much is really possible yet and the equipment has suffered quite a bit.
