Snow condition
You can't really complain about the snow conditions now, even in the denser forest it's good now (although also on the north side with a base before the snowfall). I can't say anything about the snow conditions further up due to limited visibility and operations, but probably a lot of exposed slopes and ridges have been blown away.
Snow quality
Approx. 60 cm of fresh snow in the last 2 days, with temperatures still cold. Unfortunately, strong wind influence on open areas, even in the denser forest there is at least some wind. Nice to ride, but the face shots hurt a bit with the drifting snow and it's actually a bit too much for the relatively flat terrain.
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: strong
Altitude: 1300 m – 1800 m
Risks
Wind intensity: High (40 – 60 km/h)
According to the LWD, a 4, even below the tree line. I can endorse that, I've rarely seen a snowpack in the forest that is so prone to disruption. The drift snow is already very easy to trigger in somewhat steeper areas and breaks on the boundary to the old snow. Small, slightly lighter and steeper terrain crests are already enough for snow slabs to come loose (see photo). Unfortunately, it won't get any better tomorrow with the warming, the avalanche situation remains very tense.
Avalanche activity
Dry loose snow avalanche
Altitude: 1700 m
Overall impression
Nice day of treerunning in the Zillertal. Due to the strong wind, only limited lift operation and the tense avalanche situation didn't allow for much, but we made the best of it and made some nice turns in the somewhat denser and not too steep forest, there were also plenty of face shots and deep powder snow. All in all in the upper 3-star range :)
