Exposition

South South-West West

Snow condition

30 cm fresh snow
Descent to valley (to 1400 m)
Blown backs
Variations of snow cover

Around 10 cm of fresh snow at the start and steadily increasing with altitude. From 2000 m there was an average of around 30 cm. In the steeper south-facing terrain below 2200 m, there was hardly any snow before the snowfall. On the descent, we had about 150 challenging vertical meters for the equipment. Fortunately, we were still able to find skiable lines. Some of the rocks were only lightly snow-covered and not really visible.

Snow quality

3 von 5 Sterne
Hard, pressed snow
Wet snow
Powder snow

Contrary to the weather forecast, there was more or less constant sunshine from the start at 7:30 am (our schedule speculated that the sun would only appear later in the day). As a result, the snow became wetter earlier. As the altitude increased, the fresh snow was occasionally affected by the wind. Fortunately, the descent went well and we just managed to get 3 stars. Tomorrow, Krusti the crustacean will have already worked the sunny terrain.

Risks

Old snow problem
Diurnal warming
Much fresh snow
South South-West West

Wind intensity: Low (< 20 km/h)

The snow quality would have been better on the north side today. However, due to the Altschee problem and fresh snow with wind, we deliberately opted for a south-facing tour. In addition, we could see on a firn tour about 1.5 weeks ago that there was already a lot of snow in this area.

Overall impression

Worse

Another scenic, lonely ski tour with a winter feeling. Many thanks to the team of 3 in front of us (they were the only people we saw today) who groomed part of the route. In the high altitudes, however, south-facing tours are only possible with walking routes.
