Hochfeiler - west flank
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Descent via the Weißkarferner still possible down to approx. 2650m. Above 3000m there is still really good snow, crevasses are well covered with snow. Snow conditions in the west flank are also good, drop-in possible from the summit cross, the north face no longer looked really good from above, quite rutted by avalanche gullies.
Snow quality
Despite the very warm temperatures, it didn't snow up until late. We waited a good hour at the summit, then left at 10:30 am. The west flank was still rock-hard at this point. Below the flank there was perfect firn (from approx. 3300 - 2900m), below that it quickly turned into summer snow, which was also nice to ski.
Risks
In the morning, be aware of the risk of falling due to the very hard conditions. Otherwise, you should keep an eye on the risk of falling into crevasses, as almost everything that can come down has already come down from steep terrain. Nevertheless, pay attention to the daily warming and be back down early enough.
Overall impression
A pleasant end to the season on the Hochfeiler.
Unfortunately, the north face is no longer in conditions suitable for downhill skiing, but you can still enjoy some nice wedeling on the west flank and the adjoining Weißkarferner.
Unfortunately, the 2019/2020 winter season is now slowly coming to an end. Carrying the board + boots on your back for 1000 m doesn't have to be on every tour either :D
