ST Fernpassrinne - broken off because not properly frozen through

Overall impression
Snow condition
Enough snow in the forest, then absolutely no problems anyway.
Snow quality
Super frozen through in the forest. Up to approx. 1500 meters, the snow cover was a few cm thick, so there should probably also be a time window with firn. Above 1500m there was only a 2-3 cm thick layer of harsch that broke under my skis and poles when I was walking. I assume it will be deep there as soon as the cover is gone. I had to jump around there to get around the bend, seems to have been quite a local problem, on mountains nearby it was probably fine today.
Risks
We turned around at about 1800 meters because we no longer felt safe. There was at least thirty centimetres of wet snow underneath the snow cover. However, neither of us had much experience of spring conditions.
Overall impression
I don't think I've ever been on the final descent at 7...there were two groups going up after us, so it wasn't worth the (probably low) residual risk today - I'd rather make the wrong decision. With the predicted lower temperatures, the problem should no longer occur.
