Hochwannig oder doch die Grünsteinscharte?!
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
On our tour without any problems down into the valley. It gets increasingly thinner on the south side. Everywhere the same story
Snow quality
10 cm of mostly pressed powder snow on an even old snow surface. Wasn't always well connected, but none (break propagation). The fresh accumulations of drift snow can be triggered in isolated cases, especially on very steep northwest, north and northeast slopes. [...] The danger spots are rather rare and easy to recognize.
Risks
Overall stable conditions, as despite the wind, there was simply not enough snow for a major drift snow problem. As we know, old snow cover is not a problem this year.
Overall impression
Saw the whole mountain on the approach. Then nothing at all during the ascent. The weather gods had mercy on us after all.
PS: The title refers to another team that reached the summit after us. While we waited for better visibility, we got talking and at some point it became clear that they wanted to do the Grünstein bypass and now that they were in the Grünsteinscharte, they just had to descend to Drachensee.o0
