Grünstein bypass - still beautiful powder snow on the north side
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
Fits well. I've never seen much snow in Biberwier under the lift, I think that's quite normal. Good enough for the whole tour. On the descent from Grünsteinscharte to Coburger Hütte you have to watch out for stones, but in my experience it's rarely any different.
Snow quality
On the north side 15-20 cm of powder, very light wind cover in places but overall nice to ski. Getting better towards the bottom, damp from about 1700 meters. Piste very wet at the bottom. The east-facing descent into Hell was completely hard except for the north-facing edge. The ascent to the Grünsteinscharte was a mixture of broken snow and hard. From Tajatörl someone skied down the west side towards Coburger Hütte, which also looked powdery. The ascent through the icy layer under the powder snow was quite strenuous at times.
Risks
Quite stable but a little less stable than I would have expected. There are several steep spots where the surface is off as a board. In the lower part of the Brendlkar at approx. 1800m on a slope with 40-45 degrees I also kicked a surface board loose. The connection between the new snow and the old snow cover is therefore rather poor. It doesn't really come together much, but it can pull your feet away. In my opinion, it's not necessarily ideal for really steep stuff, it's a bit dangerous and, above all, it's easy to just ride on the very hard layer underneath.
Overall impression
The landscape is always very beautiful, most of the descent is on the snow side and therefore good, but not perfect either. Yesterday was much better I suppose. I was surprised how busy the area was despite the de facto closed border with Germany, we must have seen 60 tourers today. On the way home it rained briefly at 6 degrees at 1100 meters, hope it didn't rain too much.
