BookReview | Downdays Ski Stories Volume 5

Thank you, Ethan and the Downdays team, for capturing the current ski culture so well.

02/01/2025 by Hannes Hemper
Magazines used to dominate the scene - today a lot is digital, but that's okay. Change is always present. Ethan and the Downdays team have found a great middle ground: One magazine per year, although this one is for the last two years, which is inspiring both visually and in terms of content.

There is simply something special about holding a magazine in your hands that counters the rapid consumption of social media. The mixture of both - print and online - is the way forward.

With exciting stories about athletes such as Dennis Ranalter and interviews with Lisa Zimmermann and Finn Bilous, the magazine meets key figures who are shaping the scene for tomorrow. If you are nostalgic and want to escape the fast pace of social media, you should pick up this magazine and support this great team.

The magazine is divided into four categories: People, Places, Events and Interviews.

People: One highlight is the introduction of Magnus Graner, a Swedish skier, member of The Bunch and co-founder of 1000 Skis. With his latest film Longing for Akkha he shows his vision of ski films and documentaries. Find out more about what drives him and what makes Magnus @skimanguy.

Places: The feature about Craig Murray, better known as @weazydavis, and his friend Finlay Woods, who is behind the camera, stands out in particular. Their mission takes them to their homeland: Aotearoa - New Zealand, in an area that has hardly been skied yet - due to its difficult accessibility. In their adventure, they explore the deepest backcountry and experience both good and challenging conditions. Watch the movie to get an idea, then read the article. Spoiler: Horses as a means of transport instead of helicopters!

Events: Yes, the marketing budget in the skiing world is getting smaller, and big events like in the 2000s are hard to find. Athlete invitationals are almost non-existent. But a new generation is taking matters into its own hands. In 2022, Ferdinand Dahl, James Woods and Øystein Bråten founded the FIS-free comp series Jib League. This year it enters its third round and over the last two seasons it has simply delivered the best park competition content out there. Read more about it and immerse yourself in the spirit with pictures and background information.

Interviews: I was most moved by Lisa's story. Over the last few years, I've kept asking myself what exactly happened after her injury, how she dealt with it and how she finally rediscovered her love of skiing. Her story is touching and personal - highly recommended.

Thank you, Ethan and the Downdays team, for capturing the current ski culture so well.
