Partner news | Care of GORE-TEX clothing

With the right care, your ski outfit will last longer!

by PowderGuide 01/02/2021
The rumor still persists that clothing with GORE-TEX or similar membranes should be washed as rarely as possible, but the opposite is actually the case: sweat and dirt impair breathability and skin oils can shorten the life of the seam tapes or the laminate.

With a dirty jacket and extensive tape over the seams of your trousers, you may look like a hardcore skibum, but to maintain the function of your expensive hardshell gear, it makes much more sense to wash and waterproof it properly!

Note the care instructions

Good laminates and coatings don't mind many washes. How often a wash is necessary depends on the frequency of use and the degree of soiling. A mountain guide who uses his jacket intensively and daily may wash it once a week. However, you should always follow the manufacturer's care instructions before washing, as not every laminate can withstand everything. Clothing made from Gore-Tex Shakedry™, for example, must not be dry-cleaned, tumble-dried or ironed.

Use liquid detergent, but not too much

Before washing, all zippers and straps should be fully closed. Outerwear can generally be washed at 40° on a gentle cycle (easy-care) with the addition of a small amount of liquid detergent. A lot of detergent does not make the whole thing cleaner, but is counterproductive: detergent residues that remain in the clothing after washing act as a wetting agent and attract water. They must therefore be removed completely. So: use less detergent and ideally rinse twice. Special detergents for functional clothing are not required.

Drying and waterproofing

If the GORE-TEX jacket feels wet and clammy, this is usually because the waterproofing applied to the outside is no longer working properly, water is no longer beading off and the outer fabric is absorbing moisture. Even with normal use of the clothing, the waterproofing wears off over time. However, it can easily be refreshed! For this you need: Heat.

After washing, you should allow the garment to air dry and then put it in the dryer on a low setting for 20 minutes. Please note: Follow the manufacturer's care instructions on the label! Not all items are suitable for the tumble dryer! In this case, or if you don't have a tumble dryer, heat treatment can also be carried out with an iron on a low setting. To avoid melting the expensive nylon or polyester jacket, simply place a cotton cloth (e.g. towel) between the garment and the iron.

Heat treatment is always necessary after washing or applying new waterproofing agents. Heat treatment can also be carried out without prior washing.

Impregnation

The original impregnation can be reactivated several times with heat until it is really rubbed off. There are different products for reimpregnation, which can be washed in or sprayed on. The advantage of the spray version is that it can be applied locally if, for example, only the area on the shoulder where the rucksack strap rubs needs to be treated. More environmentally friendly waterproofing agents without harmful fluorinated active ingredients, such as those from Nikwax or Fibertec, now come very close to fluorinated products in terms of water repellency and are more than sufficient for normal outdoor sports enthusiasts.

In the meantime, more environmentally friendly, PFC-free DWR waterproofing agents, such as those used by many clothing manufacturers, are also very powerful and reliably waterproof. If you are looking for the non-plus-ultra waterproofing for hours of heavy rain hikes or similar, GORE-TEX PRO clothing is a good choice.

Repairs

If the clothing has holes, even the best waterproofing agent won't help. You can repair small holes yourself with suitable adhesive patches, but the GORE-TEX repair service can often help with larger problems. If you don't want to wash and waterproof your clothing yourself, you can also have this done professionally by the Gore Care Service.

In summary: If you wash your outdoor clothing regularly and care for it properly, it will last longer and smell better. It's also easy on your wallet and the environment!

Competition

To help you wash your hardshell gear, we're giving away a GORE-TEX Wash and Care Set as shown above left (washing/impregnating agent)! Answer the following question in the article comments or in the corresponding Facebook post to take part:

How old is your oldest piece of hardshell clothing and when did you last wash it?

The closing date for entries is midnight on January 15. There is no legal recourse, winners will be drawn and notified by PN.
