10 year Anniversary of the Splitboard Festival at Lake Achensee

PG Anselm was there and shares reports from the weekend

by Anselm Köhler 01/21/2024
Every year, the Splitboard Festival and Testival takes place on the Tyrolean fjord, halfway between Munich and Innsbruck, in the cold hole of the northern Alps, in the snow-rich Karwendel, more precisely in Pertisau at Lake Achensee. Splitboard enthusiasts come together - whether they are experienced splitboarders, beginners or newcomers. Old-school hands who still saw their boards by hand and manufacturers and providers of splitboard tours and camps are also present. This year for the 10th time - congratulations on the anniversary edition. I want to check it out, it's a first for me.

Thursday evening: First of all, SchnÖgsln - the annual event organised by the Austrian Society for Snow and Avalanches (ÖGSL) - in other words, a humorous talk, beer and socialising with the "young" generation of avalanche researchers and forecasters. Time and again, the conversation turns to the current good conditions. After 4-5 beers, I come to the conclusion that I have to enjoy the loose powder snow somewhere on Friday morning!

In my dreams, I'm already planning my freeride adventure for the next day. Friday morning, or rather the morning before, the world looks very different. Sleepy and with a certain tiredness, I check the programme of the splitboard festival at Lake Achensee again, which will be my main activity for the weekend. Start at 12 noon, uff, and I thought it would start in the early evening. So I quickly do a few things in town, pack, have breakfast and off to the train. On the train, I realise that I've at least forgotten my jacket. So I get off at the next stop, go back home, repack - there are actually two or three more things I want to take with me - and head back to the train. It's better to be late than to be ill-equipped. And who wants to start the weekend with stress?

The train takes me quickly and easily to Jenbach, the regional bus directly to the festival site in Pertisau at the valley station of the Karwendel mountain railway on the Zwölferkopf. There are small tents from the partner companies on the site, where splitboards are eagerly being worked on. A central component of the splitboard festival at Lake Achensee is the testing of the latest splitboards, bindings and equipment, as well as airbag rucksacks and avalanche transceivers. Traditionally, participants get an overview of the latest boards on Friday afternoon and choose their equipment for the Saturday tour, which is professionally adjusted on site. The mountain railway next door makes it possible to test the binding settings directly and adjust them if necessary. Equipment hire is included in the festival ticket and is conveniently organised with a chip system so that you don't have to constantly dig out your ID card.

After accreditation and choosing my equipment, I walk to my accommodation. I am amazed to see the two classy but very cosy hotels, which are almost exclusively occupied by the festival participants. The Hotel Karlwirt, which has been welcoming guests since 1794, serves the included evening menu with excellent food and the hotel's own Achensee beer. The evening programme also takes place at the Karlwirt. The other accommodation is the Alpenhotel Tyrol - very modern and adults-only - and above all nationally renowned for its breakfast with its own honey, homemade jams and the best pancakes and waffles far and wide! The hotels' recreational facilities with whirlpool and saunas, which invite you to relax and warm up after your splitboard tours, deserve special mention. The accommodation in one of the two hotels is already one of the highlights of the festival.

By the evening at the latest, you should have registered at the mountain guide table for a tour the next day. Every Saturday and Sunday there are ten tours to choose from, ranging in difficulty from blue to black - from beginner to challenging, with up to over 1000 metres in altitude. Included are tours focussing on technique, i.e. ascent, conversion and descent techniques especially for splitboard tours and tours where avalanche know-how is taught.

I decide in favour of the Gamskopf in the Alpbachtal for Saturday - the decisive factor was the guidance by a local guide who knows the terrain like the back of his hand. Without a map, Markus leads us through light pine slopes towards the summit - a dream terrain for every splitboarder! The weather is perfect all day, but the east and north-facing slopes feel like an oversized fridge. Only at the summit is there sun and luckily not so much wind. We enjoy a cosy snack with a view over the Zillertal Alps - you could probably spot ten more Gamskögel, Gamsspitzen and Gamsköpfe in the endless mountain panorama. Another half an hour passes before everyone has removed their splitboards from their skins and stowed their poles in their rucksacks. But why rush when January has blessed us with such a dream day? On the descent, everyone can twirl their own line in the Swiss stone pine forest into the valley - awesome!

Back at the festival site, we realise that the manufacturers and partner companies haven't had a ray of sunshine all day at the festival base. The Karwendel mountains tower too steeply above Lake Achensee. So it's definitely worth going on tour in the sun during the day instead of "just" testing splitboards all day long. But a few of the 170 or so participants did that anyway. Others train at the avalanche transceiver workshops directly at the festival site.

The afternoon is all about celebrating the 10th anniversary of the festival. There will be free beer and cake with the festival logo. Lots of goodies will be raffled off, including to repeat offenders, i.e. participants who have already attended several times. In fact, I met some people who have been there from the very beginning. In the first edition there were around 20 participants, and now the festival is a big family and a fixture in splitboard circles.

It would have been cool to have a few fire barrels to keep warm at the festival site, but fortunately the band "Fire Mountain Kombo" from the Tyrolean lowlands took care of that in the evening. They played a dialect mix of rock, punk and ska! One of the participants also jumps on stage and they jam two songs together - fantastic. In general, I really like the relaxed atmosphere at the festival and at the party. Many of the participants tend to have a short party in the evening, to be fit to go on tour the next morning. And others... Well, they just go on a bit longer.

On Sunday, I decide to go on a tour in Hochfügen, the weather is glorious again and the powder snow on the ascent makes me look forward to it. Unfortunately, it soon becomes clear that the wind has not been idle overnight above the tree line. On the summit of the Sonntagsköpfl it storms unpleasantly, and we just grin quickly for the summit photo and make our way back down. Obviously, the hollows and edges of the terrain are loaded with deep snow, so we look for a defensive track. We didn't have the best snow, but we were out with nice people. In the evening, we read in the avalanche report that it was the day with the most avalanche incidents of the season so far. As always, it's better to do without once again. Conditions or not, you definitely shouldn't miss out on the splitboard festival on Lake Achensee!

A big thanks from me goes to the team at Freeride-Guide.com, who have always organised the festival. Have a look at their website, they offer really cool tours and camps, with a focus on remote and unknown regions. Also a big thank you to Sport-Conrad.com, who as the main sponsor provided a lot of the additional rental equipment (airbag rucksacks, avalanche transceivers, poles etc.) and also test splitboards. Thanks also to all the manufacturers who braved the cold at the stands in the everyday shade and turned the festival into a test festival: K2, Nitro, Arbor, Jones, Burton, Amplid, Rad-Air, Telos, Korua, Spark and Deluxe.
