ContestHappening 1 2025/26 | 1st FWT Stop Baqueira Beret

Baqueira Beret delivers freeride spectacle at its finest

01/16/2026

Blue skies, fresh snow and 3,000 fans who turned the slope into a cauldron. The start of the Freeride World Tour by Peak Performance 2026 could hardly have gone better. At the Baqueira Beret Pro by Movistar, the legendary Tuc de Bacivèr celebrated its comeback as a venue for the first time since 2023. And the slope immediately showed why it enjoys cult status among freeriders. Despite the challenging snow cover after fresh snow and wind, everything came together on the day of the contest. The riders heard the noise of the crowd right at the start, let it push them - and delivered bold lines, big airs and genuine world-class freeriding.

Snowboard ladies: Rookie alarm - Mia Jones strikes

The first big moment of the season belonged to Mia Jones. The US-American not only celebrated her FWT debut in Baqueira, but also her first victory. Aggressive in the upper steep slope, confident in the drops and with a perfect cliff jump as a highlight, she made a big statement. 69.67 points, the highest score of the day and a clear victory.

Behind her, Anna Martinez impressed with a creative, controlled line (66.00 points), while Michaela Davis-Meehan took third place. Strong from an Austrian perspective: Sarah Bacher showed a smart, fluid run on her FWT debut and finished sixth.

A rookie wins the season opener for the second season in a row - déjà vu? In 2025, Noémie Equy also started her title season with a debut victory...

Men's snowboard: Rivera sets the benchmark

In the men's competition, Liam Rivera immediately made it clear that he is a force to be reckoned with in 2026. Backflip, technically clean passage and a creative finale earned him 88.67 points and victory. A statement right at the first stop.

French rookie Sacha Balicco landed several buttery 360s and snatched second place. Holden Samuels completed the podium with a high-speed run and a big 360.
In short: this category is going to be really wild this year.

Ski Ladies: Justine shows once again that she is the current freeride queen

When Justine Dufour-Lapointe is at the start in Baqueira, things get serious. The overall and last year's winner dominated once again and took the victory with 86.33 points - including a perfectly landed backflip and another series of casual airs.

Behind them, French rookies Zoé Delzoppo and Lou Barin provided a breath of fresh air on the podium. Lena Kohler , who you can find out more about in a big interview here soon, came ninth and deliberately opted for control instead of risk after her crash last year.

Men's skiing: A decision by centimeters at the top

It couldn't have been more exciting: less than one point separated the top 3. In the end, Ben Richards came out on top by a wafer-thin margin with 86.67 points. Lincoln Loop, 360 and an extremely clean flow brought him victory.

Close behind: Toby Rafford with a legendary line on the right side of the face - exactly where Aymar Navarro made history in 2023. Third place went to Wei-Tien Ho.

Max Hitzig was also strong: backflip, 360, fourth place - a really strong comeback after an injury break. Valentin Rainer had to accept 16th place after making a mistake.

Conclusion: Baqueira sets the tone for 2026

The season opener delivered: Rookie victories, razor-thin decisions, world-class runs and a crowd that turned the Tuc de Bacivèr into a seething cauldron. The rankings are taking shape - but one thing is already clear: this FWT season will be anything but predictable.

Next stop: Val Thorens, France with a weather window from January 24 to 29, 2026.

If you're not excited now, you're missing the boat...
