ContestHappening 4 2024/25 | 4. FWT Stop Georgia Pro

Wild, wild, Georgia!

03/02/2025 by Timo Macvan
Yesterday, Saturday, the world's best freeriders came together again to determine the winners for the fourth time in the 2025 season. This time, the elites battled it out on one and two boards in the wild Caucasus, in the shadow of the 4858 m high Tetnuldis, and threw themselves down the Kakhiani.

Once again, PowderGuide was on site ahead of the Freeride World Tour and will be reporting on it in detail. However, due to the critical avalanche situation, the contest had to be postponed from its original date - which is why we were unfortunately unable to be in Georgia for the final contest.

Before the contest

On Friday, February 21, we arrived in Mestia and went straight to the riders' meeting, as there was some exciting news to report: A new face, Kaseb, was determined to be the safest option for the contest in the Tetnuldi area and confirmed for the coming Saturday afternoon. This didn't exactly lead to beaming faces among some of the participants, but rather to worry lines. There were several reasons for this. Firstly, many riders had only arrived a few hours ago and were exhausted from the long journey. Justin Dufour-Lapointe, for example, was still on the same plane as me and landed in Tbilisi at around 5am. This was followed by an 8 to 10-hour car journey over snow-covered roads. Furthermore, the quality and quantity of photos and videos of the new Face were not as good as those of the Face that was ridden last year. In addition, no one has been able to see the slope live as clouds blocked the view.

This is why the responsible safety team, consisting of internal and external staff, explained the situation in detail and answered all critical questions about the process and decision-making. This was primarily based on the safety of the riders, as it was not possible to adequately secure the area within half a day. The issue of broadcasting also played a role, as the necessary set-up work for a safe broadcast could not be guaranteed until the scheduled start at 2 pm. So there were a lot of concerns on the part of the organizers.

Throughout the evening, we could literally feel the tense atmosphere. There was definitely a sense of drama, but that was understandable, because the race is inexorably heading towards the cut in Fieberbrunn and everyone wants to be at the final in Verbier.

All the effort, all the excitement and nervousness ultimately proved to be unfounded. Saturday, February 22, was at its best - a classic bluebird powder day. The face check was scheduled from 9am to 12pm, the forerunners were due to start at 10:30am, and the transmission team was already working from 7am in freezing -30°C in the shade to ensure a smooth transmission.

But then the day took an unexpected turn - a sad but absolutely correct decision was made. During the safety work on the Kaseb, almost the entire slope suddenly broke away as an avalanche. This made it clear that competition on this day was impossible. Later on, as some of you will have seen on social media, there was another incident. Some riders triggered a massive avalanche on a slope with a gradient of less than 30° - fortunately without any personal injury. At the same time, the media team was on an opposite slope, exactly in the area where the avalanche finally came to a standstill.

The sight of this force of nature gave us a brief moment of shock, as initially nobody knew whether anyone had been affected. The mountain rescuers immediately launched a search operation, and the riders on the slope also carefully zigzagged their way through the avalanche field to make sure that no one had been buried. Our state of shock gave way to absolute relief when the all-clear was given and it became clear that canceling the event was the only right decision.

Unfortunately, it was not possible to hold the Georgia Pro in the coming days. Other slopes were also considered, but either the weather or the risk of avalanches showed who decides what people do in the Caucasus. This led to the showdown on the last possible date in the calendar on March 1st. Once again, the entire white panorama opened up with countless four to five thousand meter peaks.

Georgia Pro 2025: The FWT showdown on Kakhiani is set!

Wait, check. Weather chaos, check. Exciting action? Guaranteed! After a few days of uncertainty, the FIS Freeride World Tour by Peak Performance finally gave the green light: the Georgia Pro could take place on Saturday, March 1, 2025. And as originally planned, the legendary Kakhiani was the place to be! The Kaseb, which was considered a possible alternative, was cancelled after intensive stabilization measures - too many triggered snow slabs made the slope unskiable. However, after the latest checks, Kakhiani proved to be the best and safest choice.

Kakhiani: Technical, challenging and unpredictable

With a starting line at 3,170 meters and a steep vertical drop of 330 meters, Kakhiani is one of the most challenging spots on the tour. The north-westerly orientation normally promises top snow quality, but the last few days have been tough: strong winds of up to 60 km/h have compacted the surface, which speaks for a fast and direct line choice.

The temperatures? Bitterly cold! At -25 °C, the snow is dry and grippy - ideal for speed, but also a real challenge.

Everything was prepared, it was worth the wait - even if I was a little wistful watching the stream at home in the perfect conditions. But in the end, it's not about personal sensitivities, but about the riders - and they delivered an impressive performance that can only be experienced in freeride.

Results Georgia Pro 2025: Spectacular runs and close decisions

Snowboard men: Bramwell celebrates comeback

Cody Bramwell (GBR) is back with an impressive run! After a mixed season, he delivered a flawless run with a massive backflip and a 360 over a cornice - 85.67 points meant his first win of the season. He was followed by Liam Rivera (SUI) with 71.33 points, while Victor de Le Rue (FRA) came third with 67.33 points. Timm Schröder (GER) showed a creative line, but fell after a high jump and finished sixth with 63.83 points.

Women's snowboard: Noémie Equy remains unstoppable

Noémie Equy (FRA) extends her lead in the overall standings! With a fluid and controlled run including a frontside 360, she secured victory with 79.00 points. Michaela Davis-Meehan (AUS) followed in second place with 70.33 points, while Núria Castán Barón (ESP) came third with 69.33 points. Equy was delighted: "I'm super happy about this win. The mountains here are incredible!"

Women's skiing: Zuzanna Witych triumphs under pressure

Zuzanna Witych (POL) secured her first win of the season with a strong, technically clean run through rocky terrain. Her 77.00 points were enough for victory ahead of Jenna Keller (SUI, 73.67 points) and Taylor Dobyns (USA, 68.67 points), who celebrated her first FWT podium. Lena Kohler (GER) was unlucky to miss out after a fall and slipped to sixth place in the overall standings.

Men's skiing: Marcus Goguen dominates again

Despite illness, Marcus Goguen (CAN) delivered an almost perfect run with a 360, cork 720 and clean grab - a whopping 92.33 points meant his second win in a row! Martin Bender (SUI) jumped a strong 360 and backflip to take second place (90.33 points), while Virgile Didier (FRA) finished on the podium for the first time with two massive backflips and 89.17 points. Valentin Rainer (AUT) and Tiemo Rolshoven (GER), on the other hand, had a difficult day and dropped down the overall standings.

With these results, the tension in the overall standings remains high - and the next stop in Fieberbrunn promises even more action! Also in the selfish hope that the Tyrolean Alps will get some fresh snow.
