Event report | 7th Snow & Safety Conference in Zürs am Arlberg

A successful event at the start of the winter season despite the fog and rain

by Patrick Wehowsky 12/13/2018
The Snow and Safety Conference in Zürs am Arlberg is now part of the season opener on the Arlberg for the seventh year in a row. After last year's perfect conditions with a sufficient base and an additional load of fresh powder snow just-on-time, the participants and organizers were reminded once again this year that early winter does not always have the thickest snow cover.

Even the journey there was fundamentally different to the previous year. A light drizzle accompanied us over the Fernpass and it wasn't until we reached St. Christoph that the aggregate state of the water changed into our preferred white, crystalline form.

Only a fraction of the lifts and pistes on the Arlberg were open due to the poor snow conditions. Off-piste skiing was not possible, especially in the rather rocky terrain on the Arlberg. This situation, which was already foreseeable in the previous week, led to DPS, a major sponsor, canceling its ski event and participation. As a result, the number of participants at Snow&Safety this year was significantly lower than in previous years, but this did not dampen the good atmosphere at the bar. Due to the poor conditions, the freeride courses (Freeride&Safety Coaching) for adults were sensibly not held, but the free offer for young people was maintained despite the weather-related adversities.

One of the highlights of the conference was the already firmly established multiple burial scenario by mountain guide Stefan Rössler. He was able to vividly present three different situations (companion rescue, Recco, exploratory chain) to a heterogeneous group of participants within a scenario in a rather short time and was able to give the participants valuable help for a hopefully never occurring emergency with all kinds of small but fine tips on shovel strategy and general organization. The weather situation with poor visibility also contributed to the realistic presentation of the scenario.

The highlight from my point of view was certainly a participant who was using what can only be described as an antique dual-frequency device (LVS).

These devices, which were sold in the 1980s, transmitted at both the current standard frequency of 457 kHz and 2257 Hz. These devices should, among many other reasons for new devices, no longer be used today due to a potentially life-threatening aspect. The frequency fidelity of these devices is not as pronounced as that of modern devices, which is why modern devices may no longer be able to detect these "antique" devices. This is a risk that you should no longer take, despite your traditional attachment to "your" avalanche transceiver.

The evening presentations by the invited experts, which this year included our snow spotter Lukas Ruetz, were always informative. He, as well as the head of the Tyrolean Avalanche Warning Service (Patrick Nairz & Rudi Mair), pointed out the great benefit of up-to-date feedback to the warning service. You don't have to be an expert to create a complete profile, including temperature history. The occurrence of surface frost and the local snow/rain line, as well as new avalanches and subsidence noises, which should ideally be reported to the warning service with altitude and exposure, are of great importance to the warning service. We were assured that any feedback would help the warning services to assess the situation more precisely! So if you observe something, simply send a short email to lawine@tirol.gv.at so that all winter sports enthusiasts can benefit from it.

Conclusion

This year's Snow & Safety Conference was significantly smaller than in previous years. This was not due to the contributions of the renowned experts from Tyrol and Switzerland. However, the organizers still need to consider whether experience-oriented presentations by exceptional athletes - Géraldine Fasnacht or Benedikt Böhm last year - are actually suitable for sharpening the focus on prudent risk management. It is to be hoped that Lech-Zürs will continue to hold on to this well-organized, meaningful event at the start of the season despite this year's decline in the number of participants.
