Winter shoes not just for skaters

by Steffen Kruse 12/20/2020
Etnies, a veteran skate shoe company, not only soles the feet of skate greats such as Ryan Scheckler and Chris Joslin, but also those of Berlin pro "Willow". With the new winter line and the Jefferson MTW, everyone's feet are pampered and winterized.

Jefferson MTW

If you don't want to miss out on the style of a skate shoe or the warmth of a winter shoe in winter, the Jefferson MTW is a great choice! The hybrid shoe strikes a balance with a chic skate shoe that comes across as narrow and wintery. Where other skate shoes can look clownish on my size 45, the comfortably padded tongue sinks towards the toe at just the right time.

I've always worn skate shoes since my youth out of conviction for the scene and the style - depending on the model. However, you always had to pay the price with freezing cold feet in winter. Those days are now numbered.

Thanks to the 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation, the shoe retains the warmth radiated by the foot inside and can definitely impress here. The microfleece used insulates and dries very quickly when wet. The thick and robust sole offers a good feeling of contact with the ground on slippery surfaces and snow, without being stiff or weighing down the footbed. I have now tested the shoe several times during longer stays in the one to two-digit minus degree range and partly snow-covered terrain. This shoe really surprised me. In the past, I had relied on shoes that were as thick as possible to keep me from freezing, sometimes even on my hiking boots. However, this new version is much more effective, stylish and comfortable. Warm feet, all's well that ends well.

The efforts of companies to support nature conservation or climate change are often the subject of controversial debate, but are now being emulated by more and more companies. Etnies has been involved since 2011 with the motto "buy a shoe, plant a tree" with over 2,000,000 trees planted and can certainly be seen as a pioneer here.

SULTAN SCW

Although not a high winter boot, the Sultan is lightly lined and waterproof, including the tongue. This makes it suitable for the journey home after a long ski tour, a few steps in the snow (even in urban slush) and certainly a suitable companion for any afterski activities. Snow and water roll off the waterproof surface, and the spilled fifth mulled wine is also repelled by the leather and synthetic material. And with the grippy and abrasion-resistant Michelin sole, you shouldn't lose traction on the "curvy" way home.

Another nice side effect of this stylish and beautifully crafted shoe: the sustainable component. The cushioning sole is made from the material "Bloom", a foam made from algae. More on this here.

What should be noted: My rather wide feet found plenty of room. However, I wear the shoe here about one size larger than usual. The model fits 44, I usually wear 42.5-43, so the shoe runs rather small. It's therefore better to order it a little larger.

This shoe will keep your feet dry and warm thanks to the light lining, and you'll be stylish and safe on the move - all in all, a good lightweight winter shoe!
