PartnerNews | Engelberg - Interview with Anton Thorin

An interview with the director of "Freeride Symphony" about his new Freeride Movie

by Klara Stang 11/21/2023
"Freeride Symphony," directed by Anton Thorin and filmed in Engelberg, Switzerland, takes viewers on a journey into the world of freeriding.

Against the stunning backdrop of Engelberg's mountains, a group of locals take us with them on the pursuit of perfect lines, breathtaking views and joy of riding. We asked Anton about his experience of making a freeride movie.

Klara: “What are you searching for?” This is the question at the heart of the trailer. Can you provide us with an answer to it?

Anton: First of all, I really like to end videos, trailers, messages with a question, it makes people think for a second of what is important for themselves and also in this case we create curiosity.

Everyone is different and is looking for different things to ski in the mountains and that's okay, in the end of the day you will always end up with a cold one laughing with all your friends and talking about the day that was spent up in the mountains. I find this a spot-on description about the community in Engelberg and what this movie is all about.

Klara: In the film description on the website, it mentions that you are searching for the perfect moment. What does that mean to you?

Anton: When a rider is coming straight against me, making the deepest turn without spraying snow all over and arms and legs are in perfect position and I snap exactly that 0,01sec moment. That's the perfect moment for me. Then you have others who love to send cliffs, doing hot laps in endless funpow, riding steep or simply out touring with a dog or friends, It really comes back to everyone being different and that's OKAY as long as it's your decision.

Klara: There are 13 of your riders. That's quite a large group! How did you all come together? How did you coordinate?

Anton: Oh boy this is a good one, it's a great mix of Swiss cheese, Scandy candy and French toast. Friends from different parts of Europe who share one thing amongst many, THEY LOVE SKIING! This past winter was difficult in many ways, I'm sure many people can relate that the forecast was very tricky to read, resulted with many last minute decisions of where and when to go and film.

Klara: What challenges did you face while filming in the alpine environments where you shot the project?

Anton: Countless things if I'm going to be honest. It was my first time making a film, so the learning process was priceless. The amount of snow was an issue, but as the director, I always tried to stay positive so that the group felt stoked about filming. I always said, as long as they left marks in the snow it was good to go. We tried to choose our locations wisely, good light, never ski in the shade, and we did some sunset shoots to increase the cinematic look to it. It was a fun challenge to plan and execute this project.

Klara: You said that the amount of snow was an issue last season. I experienced that not only the amount but also the conditions were tricky. Where there was snow, there was also a high risk. What was your decision process to stay safe and find good lines?

Anton: Yeah, that's a good question, we had a schedule that right after a snowfall we focused on less exposed areas and to let the other bigger lines settle before we went out to hunt for those lines.

Patience is key and if you walk long enough, there's always some good snow around!

Klara: What is it that keeps bringing you back to Engelberg? I've been told you're from Sweden?
Anton: I spent 8 years in Chamonix learning to ski and about mountaineering, went from a total rookie to somewhat knowing a thing or two. It was time for a change and I had friends in Engelberg, so I paid them a visit for a weekend, three months later I was living in Engelberg and I have been for the past three years.

Klara: Your film captures the beauty of alpine environments and the joy or riding. What message or emotions do you hope your viewers take home from watching your freeride adventures?

Anton: It's quite simple. I want for people to be stoked about going skiing, in their own way! If they chase what they want, then they will find that perfect moment that we all seek.

--- Thank you for talking with us! We are already looking forward to the movie!   ---
The film will be launched on December 3rd. It will be shown in Engelberg as well as on December 9th at the International Freesport Festival
