Gear Review | Julbo Promethee & Cyrius

High-end helmet & goggles in combination

by Lorenzo Rieg 04/10/2020
Julbo takes an innovative approach to helmets and goggles. For example, several high-quality ski goggles with self-tinting lenses have been produced for a while now. For the current season, they are being combined with a helmet that is specially adapted for use with ski goggles and is therefore designed not only to provide an optimum fit, but also to ventilate the goggles to reliably prevent fogging.

First impression & fit

The Promethee helmet and the Cyrius goggle are both very high-quality models, as you can see from the workmanship (and the price). The helmet, for example, is made from a combination of in-mould and ABS construction, whereby the more resistant ABS shell in the main part of the helmet is combined with the lighter construction on the sides to save weight but still ensure optimum protection and durability. The easily adjustable helmet also has adjustable ventilation openings and an innovative magnetic fastener.

The goggles are supplied with a high-quality storage bag, which is reinforced on one side to provide optimum protection for the lens, for example in a backpack. The helmet also comes with a storage bag. I tested the goggles with the self-tinting REACTIV Performance 1-3 lens.

With a head circumference of 61cm, I have a rather large skull and therefore wear the helmet in the larger size, which fits perfectly. I also adjusted the goggle strap as wide as possible, which also fits well. However, this has the effect that the goggle holder on the helmet is too small due to the position of the width adjustment on the goggles and therefore cannot be closed. If I adjust the goggles tighter, this works well of course, but the strap is then too tight for me.

Test report

The helmet and goggles wear well and are not noticeable when riding, which is of course a positive aspect. What is noticeable is the slightly muffled hearing through the helmet, as well as a good field of vision through the goggles. The Cyrius with the self-tinting lens is of course great. Depending on the degree of tinting, the lens lets between 17 and 75% of the light through and is therefore in the brighter range. The lens is also slightly contrast-enhancing, which is why it works well in low light or bad weather, as well as in bright sunshine. On long spring days with particularly high levels of sunlight, a darker lens that lets less than 10% of the light through would probably be more suitable, but the glasses are easily sufficient for such conditions.

The adjustable ventilation on the helmet works well and has the expected effect. It should also be noted that the ventilation integrated into the helmet for the goggles also works well and reliably prevents the goggles from fogging up.

Conclusion

A good set of goggles and helmet that shows what can be achieved with a coordinated combination. Thanks to the helmet's good ventilation and the self-tinting goggle lens, you are also perfectly equipped in practically all conditions.
