Gear Review | Mammut Aenergy Air HS Jacket

Lightweight hard shell jacket for ski tours and similar activities

by Lea Hartl 01/15/2022
The Air HS jacket from Mammut's Aenergy series is designed as a ski touring jacket. The material should be windproof, waterproof and hard-wearing on one hand, but light and breathable on the other.

First impression and features

The Aenergy Air HS jacket is significantly lighter than my other hardshell jackets and the material feels softer and less stiff. The first thing you notice at first glance is the colour - I have the pink-purple version with neon orange highlights. This means you won't get lost in the thick fog. If you prefer to hide, you would probably be better off choosing one of the blue-coloured options.

The features of the jacket are comparatively reduced, but not completely minimalist. You can tell that an attempt has been made to keep the weight and pack size low without sacrificing a few basic comforts. The jacket has a small inner pocket with a zip and a mesh pocket. On the outside, it has a very spacious slit pocket in the chest area, also with a zip. According to the description, this is intended for skins that you want to keep warm and therefore wear close to the body. There is actually plenty of room for my skins. Of course, there's also plenty of room for other stuff if the skins stay in the backpack. I find it pleasant that the pockets are hardly bulky when they are empty.

The ventilation zips under the arms are generously sized and extend from the elbow almost to the waist. Both the hood and the jacket waistband can be tightened using the usual drawstring system. There are Velcro fasteners at the cuffs.

Test

I've used the jacket on a number of different outings, mainly on ski tours but also when hiking in autumn. I've worn it in the rain and in a few snow showers, but unfortunately not for long periods in heavy snowfall. I have no complaints about the wind and water-repellent properties. I would say that it works as it should. I also find the breathability to be good, although I have to say that the long ventilation zips play a major role here. I don't want to question the advertised properties of the membrane, but I don't notice a huge difference compared to other hardshells. In my opinion, it is a thin and light hardshell, but still a hardshell that tends to make me sweat on the ascent. However, the material is very comfortable to wear for a hardshell.

The small pack size is very practical. The Aenergy Air can be rolled up very small and stuffed into the backpack. This is definitely an advantage over my other jackets when space in the backpack is at a premium. The large front pocket is very practical, whether for skins or other items. The zips are easy to operate even with (thinner) gloves.

I have the ladies' version of the jacket in size L. At just over 180cm tall, the sleeve length is just enough for me, I would prefer it to be a little longer. The jacket could also be a bit longer at the back for my taste.

Conclusion

Pleasantly light and packable hardshell jacket, specially designed for ski touring, but of course also suitable for other activities. I would probably choose a less minimalist jacket for freeriding in the ski resort, but the Aenergy Air HS is great for touring.
