Gear Review | Roeckl Sports Mieders GTX

Warm and high-quality freeride glove made from environmentally friendly materials

by Lorenzo Rieg 02/08/2024
Our partner Roeckl Sports has a whole range of interesting gloves in its programme, which are not only of high-quality workmanship, but are also often made from the most sustainable materials possible. We have tested how one of the top models, the Mieders GTX, performs in practice.

First impression

The gloves make a warm and robust impression. I haven't used thicker gloves for a long time, as I usually wear mittens or 3-finger gloves on cold days. The Mieders GTX are largely made of leather on the outside, which in my experience is always a good sign when it comes to gloves. Leather naturally needs some care, but then it not only lasts a really long time, but is also ideal in its combination of good grip, high robustness and moisture protection.

The Mieders GTX are part of the ECO.SERIES, which is characterised by the consistent use of ecologically oriented, PFC-free materials. For example, a fabric whose raw materials are obtained from old car tyres and the new GORE-TEX® membrane with bluesign® certification are used in the gloves. PrimaLoft® Gold, which is made from 90% recycled material, is used as insulation.

Testers and test conditions

My hands are pretty much exactly 20cm long, I tested the Mieders GTX in size 10, which fits me perfectly. I also normally wear other gloves in size 10.

I've been testing the Mieders GTX since autumn 2023, first on the glaciers when skiing on the slopes, then also on numerous ski tours and during freeriding.

Test report

The gloves are very comfortable to wear and you can get into them quickly. They are quickly adjusted with the single Velcro fastener and fit well under the cuff of the jacket (of course you can't get them over it). I also think the wrist straps are great. This means you can quickly take the Mieders GTX off and drop them - every glove should actually have those loops.

The glove is nice and warm, which is of course great on cold winter days. In spring, in warmer conditions, I think it can sometimes be a little too warm, depending on how cold you feel. However, I have to admit that I haven't yet had this case due to the winter test conditions.

The Mieders GTX is also great for gripping and handling, at least for how warm it is. Of course, you won't be performing any fine motor skills with thick freeride gloves, but gripping ski poles, operating rucksack buckles etc. works wonderfully.

Ultimately, the gloves are very robust, as expected due to the high-quality leather. After about three months of use, they still look more or less like they did on the first day.

Conclusion

Really good freeride gloves for colder conditions. Nice and warm, robust and you can still grip quite well with them. They are too warm or too thick for more sensitive activities.
