The Mammut Meron Jacket is one of the top models from the current Mammut collection made from Gore-Tex Pro, but the jacket is quite simple and lightweight, as there are no frills. Of course, this doesn't mean that the jacket isn't made to a very high standard and also looks quite stylish!
Test conditions
The jacket has been in use for around six weeks as an all-round outdoor and ski jacket. This includes cycling in the city in the rain, skiing on the piste, off-piste and ski tours in sun/wind/snow/rain. I am 184 cm tall and wear the jacket, although female, in a men's version in size L.
Test
The sleeves are long enough for me to easily pull them over my gloves so that snow definitely can't get in. The sleeves can be tightened with Velcro fasteners so that they don't ride up. The cut of the jacket is similar to that of many other more technical outdoor jackets, i.e. close enough to the body so that you don't get the jacket tangled up in abseiling equipment or similar, but still wide enough to put on a layer or two of insulation underneath. Size L is relatively large for me in this jacket. The sleeves would probably be too short in a size M, otherwise a size M would probably be enough for me.
The jacket has two large zippered pockets that can still be used under a climbing harness or rucksack strap. There is also a small inner pocket on the left (good for magnetic ski cards!) with a zipper and a slightly larger one on the right without a zipper. The drawstring at the bottom hem is easy to use. The hood is just as easy to adjust. It fits well over a climbing helmet, but may be a little tight for ski helmets, depending on the model. If you close the collar completely and tighten the hood, you can hide your face completely if necessary.
The ventilation zips under the arms are generously proportioned and, when open, provide a good draught, which is particularly beneficial during strenuous activities. If it's not windless and sunny, I often wear a hardshell when I'm hiking uphill, provided I can open it sufficiently to avoid getting completely wet and sweaty when I reach the top. This works wonderfully with this jacket.
Conclusion
The jacket does what it is supposed to do, and does it excellently. After around 20 days of use, there are no signs of wear and tear. The jacket has made a very robust impression so far. You can easily catch a branch while treeskiing without it having holes in it. Otherwise, the relatively small pack size and the rather low weight are pleasing.
