Gear Review | Mammut Alugator Ultra

The Ultralight model from the Alugator series

by Lea Hartl 03/22/2024
The large family of Mammut Alugator shovels now includes different style lengths, handle shapes and shovel blade variations for different needs and preferences. The Alugator Ultra is the lightest shovel in the range and promises stability and durability with minimum weight.

First impression

The first impression confirms it: Yes, this shovel is very light. It is also not particularly large, but in this respect it is roughly comparable with other standard models. The telescopic handle is also not excessively long and otherwise as you would expect a telescopic handle to be, without any special features. The blade has holes or symmetrical material cut-outs, which is also familiar from other Alugator models. In the description of these, there are references to "fixing holes for snow anchors and rescue sled construction". I would assume that the holes in the Alugator Ultra are also intended for this purpose (apart from the weight saving). The shovel also fits well in smaller backpacks.

At just under 400 g (exactly 395 g according to the manufacturer's website), the shovel is one of the lightest aluminium shovels on the market. The next lightest in the Alugator series is, I believe, the Alugator Light at 475g. The Ultra received an ISPO award for its "innovative material" in 2023. The shovel is made of 7075 aluminium and, according to Mammut, is "the first shovel of its kind with a welded construction". I can't classify the aluminium type any further and am only mentioning this for the sake of completeness. The shovel blade is thinner and noticeably less torsion-resistant than other models I had nearby for a comparison - an Alugator Pro Light and an older Pieps Tour.

Practical test

I've been using the shovel since the beginning of the season for a few snow profiles and to create a snack area here and there. So not a particularly extreme use, but not just carried around in my backpack either. It shovels the way it should with a relatively small but not tiny shovel. I have no complaints to report and the handling is the same as with all other shovels I know (press the button to pull out the handle, put it together and shovel). I have had problems with shovels in the past when the shaft was warped or a push button jammed. Neither has been the case here. To summarise: the shovel shovels without any problems.

What is probably more relevant is what your basic preferences are when it comes to shovels. The Ultra is a UIAA-certified metal shovel. So "formally" there is nothing to criticise here, it really is very light. If, apart from the basic function, weight is the most important factor, the Alugator Ultra is certainly a good option. If you shovel a lot, for example for deeper snow profiles or architecturally demanding kickers, a model with a larger blade and longer handle is probably a better choice. Personally, I also find a chopping function practical. However, large shovels are naturally heavier and sometimes don't fit well in the safety compartments of backpacks.

I can't judge the durability of the Alugator Ultra, as I haven't used it enough yet. I haven't tried it out in heavy spring snow or in hard avalanche nodules either. I would tend to prefer a larger and somewhat more solid shovel for this, but I assume that the Ultra can also manage this in principle.

Conclusion

Very light aluminium shovel, particularly interesting if weight optimisation is a priority.
