PowderAlert 10 2017/18 | Follow-up in the East

Ullr's Christmas greeting

by Lars Oelmann 12/20/2017
Ullr is slowly saying goodbye to our beloved pattern of the weekend trough, but first sends his best wishes to the Eastern Alps!

Alert period

Until Saturday morning.

Alert areas

Glarner Land/Eastern Switzerland up to the Rax in the east.

Wind

In the east, where it snows a lot, also quite stormy, so the snow is more likely to be transported.

Snowfall limit

Somewhat difficult. While it may rain up to 1500m in the Bernese Oberland, everything should remain snowy from 1000m in the core in the east. In general, from the Arlberg onwards, depending on the inner Alpine location, anything between 600 and 1200m can occur at the snow line. Powder will probably be quite certain in the east in higher trees, from around 1200m.

Quantities

From eastern Switzerland or central Switzerland around 30-40cm all the way to the east. In the accumulation areas from Tyrol to the Schneeberg, it could be 50cm or a little more, especially in the Salzkammergut or North Tyrol.

Where to go?

Friday into the trees. Saturday up high in Salzburgerland or Styria. Pay attention to the snow line on Friday and be careful in the east on Sunday because of the storm consequences.

Mid-term

After the holidays, something alarming is sure to happen in the western Alps up to the Arlberg. Towards the new year, it looks pretty awful again, but that is so far in the future that diligent sacrifices at the Ullrschrein can certainly move the polar high to a different axis alignment. For the time being, a strong westerly flow from Christmas is certain. We hope that it doesn't tilt to the southwest afterwards.

Powder to the people!

Here's the prediction game for the alarm!
