PowderAlert 14 2021/22 | An alarm? now? Yes, finally!

As long as the fat Ullr is still singing, winter is not over!

by Lars Oelmann 03/30/2022
Winter. Endless boredom. These are the adventures of the PowderAlert spaceship, which is finally allowed to explore new slopes, deep powder and cool temperatures.

It's been six weeks since the last alarm. Everyone has already unpacked their mountain bikes or is desperately trying to find firn under the Sahara sand. But now Ullr has finally seen sense and is actually sending us powder again. Without much wind and all the way down. Why he's only doing this now and not earlier remains a mystery of metaphysics, or rather the deadlocked northern hemispheric circulation of recent weeks.

Alert period and areas

The alert extends from northern France to the Rax in the east, but the core will stretch from the northern Valais to the Arlberg. However, it will probably also snow in the south, as an Italian low is expected to form. There, however, more in the Maritime Alps and to the east from the Dolomites onwards.

The alert will last until around Saturday evening. A few flakes may still fall here and there on Sunday, but nothing earth-shattering.

Wind

Even high up, only moderate. This means that all of the exposed ridges, rocks and south-facing slopes will only be covered in fluff. So think carefully about where you cruise.

Snowfall limit

For early April, it's perfectly okay. It starts to flake a little on Wednesday at 1800m and goes all the way down by Friday. The full amounts are from 1200-1500m, as there is hardly anything on Wednesday.

The amounts

From France to the Arlberg there are about 40-60cm. In potholes, 70cm is also possible, although the question is where these are in northeast to east-northeast jams in the Western Alps. We have this so rarely that I'm at a bit of a loss.

From the Arlberg to the east, we're scratching around the alarm levels and 25-40cm is coming. However, due to the easterly flow, I think surprises upwards are also possible here.

In the Maritime Alps and in the south-east, 30-50cm could also fall on the non-existent base. You'll have to find out whether it's enough for alpine meadows.

Where should I go?

On Thursday, nobody has to dust off the powder slats yet. On Friday, you should be able to get out here and there below the tree line in the core, but only where the base was and not yet in the trees. On Saturday, you should be able to get into the trees on north-facing slopes in the core and know what you're doing in other areas and exposures. On Sunday it should clear up in the west, but as the air mass is still quite humid, I would expect some spring clouds from late morning. It may also stay closed in the east.

Mid-term

Looks quite ok for the week after. First cool and sunny on Monday and then from Wednesday onwards, but with spring snowfall limits from 1300-1500m. Whether it will be quite warm again is still unclear.
