PowderAlert 3 2025/26 | Piemontix the Ullier!

The whole Alps are dry and barren? No! A small Ullian village is putting up resistance.

12/20/2025
Lars Oelmann
The year is 2025 AD. The entire Alps have been conquered by drought. The whole Alps? No, a small Ullian village in the southwest of the Alps is resisting the invasion.

Piemontix and his friend Seealpix are invincible over Christmas thanks to the Ullr-potion, which is why there is a first alarm in the south-western Alps just before the holidays and the chance of a second one on Christmas Day. In the last few days, it has surprisingly snowed more than expected and the upcoming east to south-easterly flow will pick up again from Sunday on to give our brave Ulliers more powder. Is a road trip worth it? More on that below.

Alert period and areas

The alert timeframe is from Sunday (21.12.) to Wednesday morning (24.12.). Then there should be a short break or at least a weakening of the snowfall before another alert is possibly due from 25.12. onwards.

The areas extend from the Maritime Alps in France via Piedmont to the north, with France only benefiting directly towards the Mediterranean and the Italian-French alpine ridge. North of the south-eastern side of the Gran Paradiso massif as far north as the Simplon, there are also alert amounts.

Wind

In all likelihood, the wind strength will be limited by the slow movement of the Mediterranean low and will also provide powder further up except for the summits, ridges and passes.

Snow line

Depending on intensity and region, between 1200 and 1600m with the higher values towards France, the Prealps and outside of the Piedmont - lower between Turin and Cuneo in the stau. Colder air will slowly flow in towards Christmas and the snow line should drop further then.

The amounts

By Wednesday morning there will be 30-60cm of fresh snow south from the Simplon or Monte Rosa to the Aosta Valley with higher values further south. It is still unclear whether it will reach the Simplon or Monte Rosa with the 30cm alarm amounts. There is almost certainly nothing further north.

From the Gran Paradiso to the French Maritime Alps, 90-120cm may fall, maybe more in the Turin Alps.

In the core of southern Piedmont, 120-150cm is coming, although I wouldn't rule out 180-200cm in Stau areas. And that would be a very stately dump. Attention, dear tipsters, this Alert will last four days, so expect snow cover increases of two thirds of the amount of fresh snow.

Where should I go?

There's a base in the core, so you can travel directly from the dry realm of the northern Alps to the village of powder resistance. Not much will be happening on Sunday, but Monday should be very nice, in the trees where they are a bit lighter. Tuesday and Wednesday will be deep but without visibility. You can have a big sip of Ullrtrank there.

Medium term

It's still unclear whether it will continue to snow from 25.12. or not, but it will almost certainly get colder, so the amounts that have fallen should stay good for a long time. Attention! If it breaks up, there will be the same weak layers in the high alpine south that we have in the north. With over a meter of fresh snow on top, you should definitely exercise caution.

A few crystal balls show Ullr giving us another alarm in the south, but that's still uncertain. Nothing relevant is likely to happen in the north before the new year.
