PowderAlert 4 2018/19 | Traffic jam kick-off in the east

It wasn't clear for a long time whether it would come. Now it's certain: cold fresh snow in the Eastern Alps.

by Lars Oelmann 12/29/2018
The last alert was too warm and too windy, but Ullr now promises to do better, at least in terms of temperatures. For a long time, it wasn't clear whether this dump would miss the Alps and end up too far east in no man's land. It was only in the last 24 hours that Ullr had an understanding and steered the flow further west so that at least the eastern Alps would be fully hit.

So Ullr finally tries to reach 4th base and hit a home run in his fourth attempt. I can promise it will be more like Star Wars Episode IV than Indiana Jones 4, because the whole thing should be pretty decent. Ullr is a fan of Felix Austria in this alert and finally orders a Melange at the Traffique for 4 euros for the first time in a long time while bringing along an eastern northern jam (and possibly a lot more Piefkes besides the Oracle!).

Alert period and areas

This alert stretches from eastern Tyrol to the Rax, with the lower alert amounts coming here on the western AND eastern edges, the core goes from northern Salzburgerland to northwestern Styria.

The alert period lasts until Monday afternoon (December 31)

Wind

It's storming at the top and Ullr also loses points in the B grade here in the fourth analuf, because with the rain crusts from the last alert and the solid amounts of fresh snow, this will be another unpleasant Lanwinenintuation. As always, however, the same applies here: it will push the amounts up to the main ridge, so that almost the full amounts should also come in the Hohe Tauern.

Snowfall line

maximum 500-800m, so powder ahoy!

The amounts:

Silently and secretly they've been creeping up in the models over the last two days and are quite impressive for such a 36-hour alert that crept in, but as they say: Silent dumps are deep.

From Tyrol to the Rax 30-50cm, with 30cm more likely at the edges, and surprisingly less in the far east. In the core 50-70cm and in the congested areas there I wouldn't rule out 80cm or a bit more, but I don't think it will be much more than that as the current is more northwest than true north.

Where should I go?

The Oracle is heading east to visit friends and you should do the same if you want powder. On Sunday (30.12.), it's still a bit on the thin side and only for locals. If you're on vacation anyway, you can have a look, but as it only starts to snow in the early hours of the morning, I would rather go to wind-protected aisles in the afternoon.

On New Year's Eve, you can certainly have fun anywhere in the core where there was a base, even in the trees. Outside of that, I would also stay in the meadows.

On New Year's Day, it's going to open up. I would make a resolution to drink less and go powdering at the top. But think about the wind and the crusts! I don't think it will be a full throttle day, as the conditions are rather unpleasant.

Mid-term

Interesting, because on 2.1. The next dump could already be on the horizon, or it could just flake a little, the crystal ball is still in disagreement, but it will stay cold and the place to be will remain the north-east of the Alps.

If you want to feed #deeppowder pictures into your Intagram account, you should be there. Even if you're too old or not narcissistic enough for it, I'd still try my luck in the east, because until January 4/5 it's going to be at least cold there and also tend to be snowy. Conclusion: not everything is perfect yet, but if there is an alarm 5 in the coming days, you are in the right place east of Tyrol.

Powder to the people!
