PowderAlert 6 2024/25 | May the average be with you!

The drought is ending. At least in the short term.

by Lars Oelmann 01/25/2025
Not so long ago in a mountain range close close by..... DROUGHT. The stars don't lie. At least not the ones in the PowderGuide ConditionReports. One star, two stars. There's rarely more for the snow conditions at the moment.

And even where there are three, the snow quality is modest. Much worse: nothing can be heard from the south except a disturbance in the Force, "as if a million skiers looked to the mountains and sighed". But now enough bad news from the Death Star, but climate change makes you realize what three stars used to mean. All skiable, no rocks. That would be a dream come true this year. But apparently Ullr has taken care of our suffering and at least wants to get back to average, because it's dumping again in the west and south and maybe we can take a step towards the old normality.

Alert period and areas

The alert extends in the west from the Maritime Alps in France to the Lower Valais and in the south from Ticino to the border triangle IT/AT/SLO with cores from eastern Ticino via the Upper Engadine to the Adamello and in the border triangle.

The alert goes off until Wednesday morning.

Wind

Sometimes more, sometimes less stormy. Stronger in the south-east and in France than in the west of the Southern Alps. Foehn storm in the north. It pushes up to the main ridge, but most of it comes in accumulations.

Snow line

Fluctuating in the western Alps between 1500 and 2000 metres and in the south between 1200 and 1800 metres on Tuesday it will be cooler from the west.

Full amounts from 1700m in the western core, in the south to 2200m in France in the foothills of the Alps.

The quantities

In the western Alps, 40-70cm will arrive in time for the Val Thorens Pro and I don't want to rule out 80-90cm in the south-west. Towards Switzerland, it will quickly become less only in the westernmost Lower Valais will it even reach 40-50cm.

In the south, around 70-100cm of fresh snow will fall from Ticino to Slovenia. In the western core 90-120cm and possibly 130-140cm in Stau areas. There some crystal balls of the oracle that push the core more towards Simplon and Ticino are exciting, but the oracle doesn't see that.

In the eastern core there will be 120-150cm and in the small Stau areas in the border region of Italy and Slovenia around our snow betting game station it will probably be 150-170cm or even more.

Where should I go?

On Sunday it's problematic, because in the west, with a base, there's not much coming yet and in the south, treeskiing will be difficult, but if you know where the base is in the cores in the south, then go for it.

Monday is an intermediate day and on Tuesday it could be very entertaining in the south and there should also be something in the trees in the west. Wednesday it's breaking up everywhere, but with the poor snowpack foundation you should take things very, very slowly.

After that the next, indefinitely long drought follows and we will probably look at the average from below again. but it remains quite cool, so that we should be able to find something on the north side for longer.
