ExperienceReport | Mammut Snow Safety Session

Avalanche course in the terrain

by Antonia Paulus • 01/09/2023
The Snow Safety Sessions organised by our long-standing partner Mammut have kicked off this season and we were there, live in the Allgäu! The event focussed on safety on the mountain - whether for ski touring or freeriding. Avalanche awareness is refreshed directly in the terrain! During a joint ski tour with state-certified mountain guides and Mammut safety experts, search scenarios are discussed, tried out and emergency equipment is tested.

As the weather was unfortunately very uncomfortable on the day of our event, we started with the theory in the seminar room of the Hotel Hubertus with the mountain guide Miri in a group of approx. 10 people. Miri explained the different snow problems and which aspects are important for tour planning in the terrain.

The "mountain playground" often presents us with major challenges. Miri used examples and personal experience to explain to us how to make the right decisions and act efficiently in critical situations. Together as a group, we planned a ski tour in theory and discussed different ascent and descent options, as these are often misjudged by snow sports enthusiasts. Which websites can be used as preparation for a day in the snow and how the terrain can be assessed more safely were examined and discussed in detail in the theory session. For participants without equipment, avalanche equipment was then lent out free of charge and the group went into the terrain to apply the theory directly.

We started our short ski tour towards the Riedbergerhorn in the Grasgehren ski area with an avalanche transceiver group check. After the first hundred metres of altitude, an avalanche scenario was prepared for the participants and we were allowed to practise the emergency situation as a group. Due to time constraints, we didn't reach the summit, but after a joint descent, we deployed the avalanche airbag backpacks to develop a feel for it and apply the correct technique.

Conclusion of the day: Even if you went on many ski tours last season and know your way around the terrain: It is essential to practise avalanche emergency situations continuously and to refresh your theory, as your knowledge may have become a little rusty over the summer!

There are still places available for the following Mammut Snow Safety Sessions:
