PSA: Brake nodes are great
10/13/2017 • PowderGuide
The glacier ski areas are gradually opening pistes and lifts and some people are certainly already tempted by the glaciers without pistes and lifts - they are already white. To coincide with the crevasse season (also known as fall), the French mountain guide school ENSA has published an informative and very interesting video on the subject of braking knots. -

WeatherBlog 7 2016/17 | Outlook and glacier excursion
12/13/2016 • Lea Hartl
When will the big change in the weather come? Well, no idea. That's actually the end of the weather topic for this week. For the time being, there won't be much change to the boring high pressure swamp that has been with us for more than long enough. The WeatherBlog is therefore devoting itself to a (subjectively) more interesting topic: two huge ice avalanches that occurred in Tibet this summer. -

Guilt Trip: A movie about skiing and guilt
12/04/2016 • Lea Hartl
Salomon TV (formerly Freeski TV) heads to Greenland in the latest edition. In addition to the film crew and the team riders, glaciologist Alun Hubbard is also on board. The pros have a guilty conscience because they pollute the environment with their many flights to exotic destinations and hope that their conscience can be soothed by helping a scientist with his work. Meaningful research? Or is it more of a show? And what was the snow like? We asked Professor Hubbard and Salomon Pro Chris Rubens a few questions about the movie. -

Story | Kayaking through Helgeland
06/05/2016 • Rcci Helfricht
For those who enjoy untamed nature in the form of freeriding and ski tours in winter, kayaking is an obvious summer activity. After all, it's all about the water and there is a "free" version on white water, as well as the touring version on rivers, lakes or the sea. Our authors Ricci and Kay were out and about with a tent, kayak and fishing rod in Helgeland, Norway in the summer of 2015. -

04/12/2016 • Lea Hartl
After a few dry, clear days, a change in the weather is on the horizon and fans of thunder and lightning are looking forward to the start of the thunderstorm season. The medium-term outlook is uncertain, but at least there is no threat of midsummer yet. Also: The Alpine Association presents its glacier report for the 2014/15 season. -

Early winter is a dog
11/27/2015 • Lea Hartl
The fog hangs in the valley, the days are getting shorter, the nights cooler, the drinks warmer. Industry magazines report either enthusiastically or critically on the events that take place on every glacier every weekend. It's the most beautiful time of the year. It's fall. But especially for skiers who are more (i.e. exclusively) off-piste, the time before the real start of winter and the first heavy snowfalls harbors a considerable number of dangers that should be taken into account. -

WeatherBlog 7/2015 - Review of 2014
12/30/2014 • Lea Hartl
The WeatherBlog joins the long list of annual reviews. It has been clear for some time that 2014 will go down in history as a very warm year. In Austria, there has not been a year with a higher average annual temperature since measurements began in 1768, and 2014 will most likely be the warmest year worldwide since 1880 (Austrian monks started measuring weather data earlier than many others). -

WeatherBlog 2/2015 - The state of the nation
11/26/2014 • Lea Hartl
The end of the fall in Austria was the warmest on record. In September it was on average 0.7°C warmer than the long-term average, in October 2.2°C, and November is likely to be even warmer with an expected 3.8°C above average. If December is not exceptionally cold, it can be assumed that 2014 will also set a new temperature record for the year as a whole. -

The experienced amateur meteorologist and powder snow enthusiast Lars Oelmann presents the first PowderAlert for the period from October 8, 2011. -

WeatherBlog for freeriders 18/2011 | Little accumulation on glaciers and onset of winter

Glaciology is a specialty of meteorology. Glaciologists go to "their" glaciers twice a year and dig holes in order to later determine the mass balance. To do this, they need helpers, usually students, who lend a hand with digging and carrying various pieces of equipment.
