At the Hannoverhaus you can choose between rooms for 2, 4, 5 or 6 people. So, don't worry: there are no more 20-person mountaineering camps here! There is also a seminar room for avalanche courses, freeride camps or tour planning for larger groups. But above all, the Alpine Club hut is climate-friendly to reach: Mallnitz can be reached from Munich in 3.5 hours without changing trains, and from Salzburg in just 1 ¾ hours. Directly after the train, a ski bus will take you to the valley station of the Ankogel cable car. If you're lucky, you can get a few powder turns from the mountain station to the hut.

Freeride base in pole position
Highlight of the hut? The location! Many lines to the middle station of the Ankogel cable car start directly below the hut's sun terrace - in the morning, no one is guaranteed to be able to steal them from you (see SpotCheck Ankogel area). Hannover Haus is also the ideal starting point for some of the best freeride tours in the Alps, e.g. the Kleine Ankogel or the legendary descent through the north-facing Knallkar to Böckstein.
The hut landlord Christopher offers home-style cooking with products from the region. Desserts such as Kaiserschmarrn, apple strudel and Bauernkrapfen are particularly popular. So it's not only worth a visit because of the great freeride terrain on the doorstep!

TouringTip | Knallkar
Tobias Hipp • 11/22/2018100 vertical meters of ascent for 1,400 vertical meters of descent! The Knallkar is one of the great delicacies of the Ankogel ski area. Not only is the ratio of ascent to descent unbeatable, the descent is also impressive: huge open slopes stretch a good 1,000 vertical meters down into the Anlauftal valley amidst an impressive rocky backdrop. The absolutely shady northern exposure often guarantees powder. -
TouringTip | Ankogel
Tobias Hipp • 11/13/2018450 vertical meters ascent for 1,800 vertical meters descent! The Kleine Ankogel is the freeride tour par excellence in the border region between Salzburger Land and Carinthia. It really has it all: a relaxed approach, an exciting short ridge ascent and a never-ending 1,200-metre north-facing slope. -
SpotCheck | Freeride Ankogel
Tobias Hipp • 11/07/2018The small Mallnitz/Ankogel ski resort is inconspicuously hidden in the north-westernmost corner of Carinthia. But there is absolutely no reason to hide: with just a few meters of ascent, you can reach enormous descents of almost 1,800 meters in altitude, which should be on every freerider's to-ski list. Overnight stay in a hut in pole position included.
