Videos of the Week #8 2024/25 | The Art of Change: A Look at Innovative Film Projects

Films that invite us to recognize our responsibility and shape change

01/17/2025
Hannes Hemper
In recent years, films have emerged that go beyond the sport itself, encouraging us to reflect on our responsibility in the climate crisis. They urge us to take imperfect, yet necessary steps to create change. With impressive action and artistic vision, some of these projects show that change doesn't have to be perfect, but instead that every step matters.

Video 1: Alaska Glacier Camp – The Movie by Inyo and Worm's Adventures

After two months on the road through British Columbia, it's time for Garrett "Worm" Warnick and Iñaki Odriozola to arrive in Haines, Alaska. There, they assemble a crew with Carver Culbeck and Jason Robinson and are flown to a glacier plateau by a propeller plane. They camp there for a week, riding exclusively on splitboards – tackling incredibly steep spines that truly live up to their name. The film also features a first descent, and it’s refreshing to see almost exclusively foot-accessed lines in Alaska.

During filming, they even had an encounter with a helicopter from Sage Kotsenburg's monster team, who had to turn around at a spot because Inyo and Worm were faster. Enjoy these powerful and aesthetic lines – a true treat for all splitboard enthusiasts.

Video 2: HOWLR | Resort Skiing by Thomas Trifonitchev

In HOWLR, Thomas Trifonitchev, aka Coach Trifo, presents a visual interpretation of "howling" through ski resorts – in his own unique style. With a focus on sidecountry, sidehits, and creative skiing, the short film delivers stylish shots. A large portion of the scenes was filmed during Dennis Ranalter's project for MSP.

Video 3: Reflection – a film by Luis Bauer & Jonas Huser

A fine project from Innsbruck, featuring guest appearances by Flo Zimmermann, Victor Heim, and Max Born. The film impresses with phenomenal editing and a simple yet effective storyline. At its core, it shows a snowboarder's visit to a therapist, reflecting on the past season – with impressive results: beautiful lines, powerful sprays, and creative butters. Hats off to this successful little production!

Video 4: Arc'teryx Presents: Every Island Has a Name – with Elena Hight, Severin van der Meer, and Jared Elston

When Severin is involved, you know it’s going to be artistic. They describe it as an "invitation to let your imagination soar." While this might not be for everyone and may seem a bit weird to some, the film explores the parallels between snowboarding, craftsmanship, and art. If you're in the mood for something special, this film is definitely worth a watch.

Video 5: Nendaz Backcountry Invitational 2025

A backcountry freestyle competition, independent of FIS regulations, enters its fifth round. Six women and twelve men compete under beautiful sunshine, fresh snow, and perfectly shaped kickers. The riders judge the event themselves, with each having three runs to showcase their skills. This year, the spotlight was on young and emerging riders in the scene.

I was particularly impressed by Jordane Legal's performance, aka @74_Jordy – an online sensation in the ski world, who brings the same mysterious vibe as Candide and is now making his first appearance in such a competition. Triple frontflips from him, triple backflips from Jake Müller! And Timo Rohlshofen showed convincingly why he's more than earned his place in the Freeride World Tour.

Video 6: DYNASTAR | TRANSMISSION - FULL MOVIE

Finally, a team movie from Dynastar. Reine Barkered shows Edgar Cheylus steep, technical lines, while Mégane Betend shares the magic of Chamonix with Dillon Flinders. A beautiful interplay of experience and enthusiasm. Sander Hadley ventures into the backcountry with Alex Lundstrom, and Richard Permin, as always, follows his own path – alone on his artistic journey, inspiring others to carve their own way.

Video 7: From Here | Protect Our Winters by Johanna Brunner and Richard Buchner

FROM HERE is an experimental short film that delves into the complexity of individual and societal positioning in the climate crisis. The film encourages reflection on the significance and value of imperfect but necessary steps toward change. It’s about taking responsibility, even when the path is unclear or imperfect. The film urges us to acknowledge our uncertainties and the desire for improvement, while also understanding the importance of collective action. It’s an invitation to show vulnerability and, despite the uncertainties in the world, make an active contribution—whether through conscious decisions or a willingness to embrace change, even when it’s not immediately visible.

FROM HERE was written and directed by Johanna Brunner and Richard Buchner. Johanna Brunner handled production, scriptwriting, cinematography, and still photography, while Richard Buchner was responsible for editing, sound design, and color grading.
